Ian Chapell talks about his 2000 mile ultra-running journey

Join us at Alpkit Ilkley on January 28th for an evening with ultra-distance runner Ian Chapell. He'll be talking about running from Yorkshire to Morocco, showing what can be done with "true Yorkshire Grit".

Ian Chapell describes himself as an ‘ad-hoc’ ultra-distance runner. He started in the late 1980’s running the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon (KIMM), now the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM). This experience has allowed him to twice compete in the Marathon des Sable across the Moroccan desert and the Gobi Challenge in the Gobi Desert of southern Mongolia.

Those events gave Ian the understanding he needed to undertake his biggest challenge, running from Yorkshire to Morocco. In 2017 Ian ran from the summit of Whernside (736m) to the summit of Jbel Toubkal (4167m) in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco; the highest mountain in North Africa. It was a journey of almost 2000 miles across England, France, Spain and Morocco over 51 days running an ultra-distance each day, unsupported, battling temperatures of +40C through Spain and Morocco.

Ian says, ‘I do not see myself as a motivational speaker but I can show what is achievable with some Yorkshire grit’.

Ian still can't keep still and as recently as June/July 2022 completed the Grande Traversée des Alpes, walking over 400 miles with +120,000ft of ascent.

The talk will start at 7pm on January 28th
