Midlayer developments

Midlayer developments

By Ronnie Legg

Mid-layers aren’t just about warmth. They breathe, wick sweat, and flex for action. A good one is like an old friend—always ready for adventure.

We’re extending our range of fleece mid-layers to include a couple of pull on styles, for low bulk insulation when you need it. These pieces are Versatile with a capital V – the kind of layers you wear all year round, for countless activities.

First up is a half zip version of the popular Akita Jacket we launched towards the end of last year, called the Yakutian. The mid-weight fleece fabric has a lovely soft back and a smooth knitted face which gives that little bit of extra protection from the wind, whilst also making it easier to layer under other clothing. The humble micro fleece has been an outdoor staple for years, and this is the Alpkit take on it – with some added extras. We’ve included thumb loops for when you need that little boost of warmth, and there’s a handy zipped pocket on the sleeve for your card, key or some cash. Other than that, it’s simple and uncluttered - the kind of layer you’ll find yourself reaching for time and time again. We’d bet it’s even smart enough to wear to the office.!

The second option, the Laika, is a bit of a conundrum – is it a base layer or is it a mid-layer? Well, actually it does both rather well! The soft brushed back is really comfortable worn next to the skin as a heavy weight base layer for when it’s properly cold, or when you’re at that awkward stage of needing more than just a long sleeve top (like the Kepler) but not quite cold enough to put on another layer. Imagine the cold, windy walk in to the Northern Corries with a heavy climbing pack – you’re hot because you’re working hard, but the wind is bitingly cold. With the Laika you’ve got a dense outer face which takes the edge off the windchill, a deep front zip if you need some extra venting, and thumb loops and a stand up collar to boost warmth if you need it.
