On Tuesday, 7th June Alpkit are helping and supporting children from St Thomas’s CE Primary School in Kendal climb the height of Everest. Through combined efforts from the Reception class right through to Year 6, children and staff are attempting to climb the height of Everest.
The whole day is to be dedicated to inter-house activities, with the main event being the sponsored climb. Money is being raised to help Community Action Nepal (CAN), a UK based charity founded by Doug Scott CBE, who made the first British ascent of Everest in 1975. The charity aims to help the mountain people of Nepal, and those effected by the horrendous earthquake 12 months ago.
Head teacher Maggie Cole says, “St Thomas’s was one of the first schools in the Lakes to receive the Gold Kitemark award for sport. We always try to broaden sport and physical challenges for our children. Last year, all pupils took part in a small fund raising activity for Nepal and the effects of the earthquake. We wanted to make the children aware that the region is still recovering from the tragedy, and that help is still needed. Lakeland Climbing Centreare very kindly hosting the sponsored climb, allowing the children access to its various climbs and bouldering problems. We’re very excited for the day, particularly as some children have not experienced climbing before.”
Alpkit are sponsoring the coach, to allow the children to travel to and from the wall during school time. Parents, governors and of course staff are also taking part alongside Alpkiteer Joe Beaumont. The event is not only raising money and awareness for Community Action Nepal, but is also allowing the children to complete a whole-school trip.
