Alternative lightweight camping mat

Cloud Base sleeping mat makes wild camping more comfortable

By Kenny Stocker

Peter Macfarlane has spent more than enough time wild camping to know what makes a sleeping mat worth it's weight in your pack. So when Pete drops a Best Sleeping Mat for 2024 review we sit up and pay attention.

It is fair to say that there isn't a bad mat in Pete's review, but at £70 less and 300 grams lighter than the articles Best Buy Rab Stratosphere we think the Cloud Base is a great alternative to either the Rab, Sea To Summit Ether Light and Thermarest NeoAir for summer camping.

Pete's review highlights several distinctive features and aspects of the Cloud Base sleeping mat that make it stand out, offering expert insight into its performance and suitability for lightweight wild camping.

Unique Construction and Comfort:

The Cloud Base is noted for its unconventional design, featuring a matrix of air pockets in two varying sizes. This design not only provides a distinct texture but also contributes to its functionality. Pete points out that the texture helps prevent slipping, especially at the mat's tapered end, which is an advantage when asleep.

Practicality in Use:

While the unique air pocket design offers benefits, Pete also mentions a few downsides. For instance, when sitting or kneeling on the mat, the gaps between air pockets can make the ground feel more pronounced compared to traditional mats. Despite this, he appreciates the mat's ability to adapt to rough terrain, as its design effectively absorbs uneven surfaces, providing a more comfortable experience than some other mats.

Easy Handling and Durability:

Ease of use is another feature that gets a mention. The mat inflates and deflates conveniently through a single valve that includes an internal flap to prevent air escape during inflation. It's also easily packable, measuring 28x8cm in its stuffsack, and comes with a puncture repair kit, which adds to its practicality and longevity.

Suitability for Specific Conditions:

Pete notes that the mats light weight and robust fabric construction make it an excellent choice for summer wild camping in hilly terrains.

Overall, Pete's review presents the Cloud Base as a unique and affordable option for lightweight wild camping, particularly attractive for its distinctive design, practicality, and suitability for summer conditions.
