Headtorches for hillwalking

Headtorches for hillwalking

By Kenny Stocker

As an avid hill walker you will recognise the critical role that a reliable headtorch plays on your adventures, especially during the shorter days of autumn and the long, dark nights of winter.

Our range of headtorches are not only designed to illuminate your path but also keep your hands free to hold your map, open gates or delve into your backpack.

Our design approach to headtorches for hill walking is based around walkers needs. Our torches aren't just bright; they're intelligently designed with the specific challenges you will encounter while hill walking in the dark.

Finding the perfect beam

The first time you use a headtorch you will be struck by how the beam illuminates both the immediate path and the wider terrain. This balance of flood and spot lighting proves invaluable, and the right choice of torch will allow you to navigate tricky sections of trail while still being able to plan the route ahead.

A wide beam provides a flood of light, illuminating the terrain closest to your feet. This is essential for stepping over rocks, avoiding tree roots or forging streams.

A powerful spotlight is useful for lighting up features far away, helping you navigate from point-to-point.

Controlling your focus

While some headtorches are designed for a specific application, the best hillwalking headtorches come with controls that allow you to focus the beam, switching from wide beam to spotlight.

These variable light settings are super convenient. On misty mornings, you can adjust the beam to cut through the fog without the glare. And when the early winter darkness falls, the clouds lift to reveal a starry night, crank it up for a clear view of the path ahead.

Long burn times

You do not want to be worrying about your light failing halfway through a hike. Our hillwalking torches have multiple power modes you can use to 'throttle' your torch. Hit maximum power when you have some tricky terrain to navigate, and knock it back to Eco when it flattens out.

By actively managing your torches output you will get the most burn time. To give you an idea of what you can expect, our Manta can run on low mode for 90 hours or 24 hours on medium power. Plenty for a weekend backpacking trip.

And for extended trips, our rechargeable options and compatibility with portable power banks give you the freedom to roam further than ever before.

Recharge and recharge again

Rechargeable batteries are an obvious way to reduce your impact on the environment. Included in our range are headtorches with rechargeable lithium ion batteries, delivering high power and long battery life.

For multi-day treks these can be simply recharged from a standard portable power bank.

If you prefer removable AA or AAA power supplies we also have these. You can use these with standard Alkaline, or rechargeable.

Preserving your night vision

LED lights are amazingly white and bright. This is an advantage most of the time, but there will be occasions when you will want a dimmer light to preserve your night vision.

Many headtorches have a low powered red or green light. Red is the most common and can be just about used for walking in ideal conditions. It is also perfect for map reading, but you will find map contours show up slightly better with a green light.

Safety on the hill

While the primary purpose of your headtorch is to light up your terrain, another important function is its use as a emergency light so you can be found. For this reason hill walking headtorches have red or white strobe modes. These run on a lower power than your main beam to preserve battery life.

User friendly design

Our user-centric design philosophy is evident in every aspect of our headtorches. Features like easily accessible battery compartments (crucial when wearing gloves in cold weather), reliable water resistance for those unexpected rain showers, and comfortable, adjustable headbands that fit over winter hats, and adjustable tilt are all features you will come to rely on.

Our commitment to innovative design, sustainability and safety has made our headtorches an indispensable part of your hill walking kit, especially during the challenging but rewarding autumn and winter months.
