Suffering mental or physical trauma can severely impact on confidence, self esteem and motivation. Getting outside and taking part in outdoor activities can be used to great strength in helping rebuild these into peoples lives who have been effected. It’s the core aim of Climbing Out.
Kelda Wood founded the charity in 2010 and she gave a brief outline of what they do.
“We achieve our aims, with considerable success, through running 5 day residential outdoor activity programmes. These programmes combine outdoor activities, including kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, gorge scrambling and hill walking, with mind management and personal development coaching.”
Along with the outdoor activities, the participants also have the opportunity to develop a network of friendship and support, reducing the isolation and social exclusion they often experience due to their illness, injury or trauma.
To provide a better experience, Climbing Out also offer the use of equipment to those that don’t have access to, or can’t afford outdoor kit. In a bit to refresh this well used kit pool they approached the Alpkit Foundation for some support and we were delighted to grant £200 which was used to purchase a number of pairs of walking boots.
Jo is their funding and administration manager and she let us know the impact it will have.
“They will be used throughout the year by those who don’t have appropriate footwear for our activities. This will be approximately 50 people.
We ran eight 5 day programmes in 2022 and plan to run 9 in 2023. All of which will use the kit purchases!”
