Through the provision of accessible and affordable outdoor learning and adventure opportunities it can make a real positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable young people, families, volunteers and communities. Outfit Moray is an outdoor learning and adventure charity that provides such life-changing adventures.
Their EnerG programme is ongoing throughout the year,making up approximately 65-80% of their outdoor learning work, but running alongside this they also have a trainee scheme aimed at supporting unemployed young people with the greatest barriers to employment.
Hayley Russell explained a little about why they approached the Alpkit Foundation.
“We actively develop potential both in young people and our team of staff and volunteers and believe investing in staff training is vital to the success of the organisation. There was one particularly enthusiastic and promising new member of staff that we wanted to be able to empower to lead sessions independently. This would also build capacity in our EnerG work to deliver additional sessions to vulnerable young people, enabling them to experience and access outdoor adventure “
Hayley got back in touch recently to let us know that through an award from the Alpkit Foundation it enabled Adam Anderson to complete his Summer Mountain Leader training back in July 2019.
“Since undertaking the training Adam has become more confident in the various aspects of the course including; Equipment required,Mountain Navigation.Hazards & Emergency Procedures,Basic rope skills, Emergency procedures and Water Hazards. These new found skills benefitted the outdoor learning and adventure sessions that Adam assisted with as part of his time at Outfit Moray.”
It’s was also brilliant to hear that Adam is now in the process of completing the necessary experience in order to progress to his assessment.
“We are delighted that Adam has used his time and experience with us as a springboard to continue his education. Growing up in the care system meant life wasn't always straightforward for him and he struggled to maintain focus but, after eight months working as a Trainee instructor, Adam has secured a place at Fort William UHI to learn Outdoor Adventure and become a fully qualified outdoor instructor. The Summer Mountain Leader training was the first step towards this, and we are pleased to have been able to support him with this”
Well done Adam. What’s so amazing about this is that not only has it seen his personal dedication and focus soaring, it will no doubt go on to inspire and give so much back to so many others that he will help experience those life changing moments in the outdoors.
