Training for the World Cup

By Nicola Beeby

Training for the world cup, athletes prepare for competitive climbing.

I’ve been out in the Alps now for 5 weeks and the time is flying past so quickly. We are currently at Bremgarten near Zurich getting some training in for the World Cup, which is getting ever closer. For the first time ever I’m hoping that it will stop raining soon!

Have done some excellent boating since we arrived, we started of in Briancon with good runs of the Fournel, Lower Gusiane, Durance Gorge to name a few, I’ve not really paddled much outside the UK before, so its been a learning experience to say the least, but I love it! Then we headed up through France to Bourg St Maurice the craziest slalom course I’ve ever been to especially when it’s releasing at 45-50cumecs.

We’ve also done some via ferattas on our off days, and I must say that heights have never been my strong point, but I’m determined and now squeal slightly less each time we go.

We spent some time in Chamonix doing some easy sport climbing, and then moved on to Zermatt near the Matterhorn for some excellent hiking, although the weather wasn’t on our side and we sat out a good few thunderstorms.

Next were off down through Austria and Italy to Slovenia, so we will keep you updated with our progress.
