Every Sonder Bike is handbuilt to order by our team of skilled mechanics, personally checked by our Workshop Manager and carefully boxed so that it is ready to ride out the box following 7 easy steps.
Happy New Bike Day.
Assembling your bike at home is a relatively simple task. This guide takes you step-by-step on how to assemble your new bike and be riding. Plus you'll learn a few tips along the way.
- What tools do I need to assemble a bike at home
- Step 1: Remove the box
- Step 2: Attach the handlebars
- Step 3: Insert the front wheel
- Step 4: Install the pedals
- Step 5: Check the tyre pressure
- Step 6: Set your saddle position
- Step 7: Final checks
What tools do I need to assemble a bike at home
The tools you need to assemble the bike are provided in the box. You will also need a bike pump in case the tyres have deflated a little in transit.
- Sonder allen key (provided with the bike)
- Pedal spanner (provided with the bike)
For regular maintainance you may also like:
- Shock pump (for suspension bikes)
- Torque wrench
- Bike grease and chain oil
- Cleaning kit
- Brake pads and brake fluid
Step 1: Remove the box
With the top of the side of the box facing up, slide your hand along the underside of the top flap to open. Use a large flathead screwdriver to remove any staples taking care not to injure yourself or scratch the bike.
Lift the bike and wheel out of the box.
Our boxes are made from recycled cardboard and are recyclable.
Step 2: Attach the handlebars
Remove the faceplate form the stem, check the cables aren't tangled around each other or the fork, then insert the handlebars and replace the face plate ensuring equal spacing.
Step 3: Insert the front wheel
Insert the wheel into the fork. Insert the thru-axle and tighten firmly with the allen key provided.
Step 4: Install the pedals
Grease the threads of the pedals and install them using a pedal spanner or allen key provided. Some pdeals are marked on the axle with a L and R. R being the drive side. The drive side pedal is a traditional thread, so threads clockwise. The non-drive side is a left handed thread, so threads in anti-clockwise.
Step 5: Check the tyre pressure
We inflate all tyres to their ideal pressure as part of our build.. If however the tyres have lost pressure during transit then inflate the tyres as needed. As a starting point, check the pressure against the recommended range marked on the tyre sidewall. Tubeless set-ups need riding-in to distribute the sealant completely and finish the seal.
Read our article on real life tyre pressures for more information.
Step 6: Set your saddle position
Set the saddle and seatpost to your desired height. See the separate article on how to fit your bike at home.
Final checks
Perform a final check - sometimes call an M check - of rear hub, saddle, cranks, brake levers, front hub.
Check the gears are correctly indexed by running up and down through the gears and finish with a final pressure check by hand.
Happy Riding.
